As a member of the ASD - Aerospace and Defense Industries Association of Europe, GIFAS supports this initiative and is associated with the Europe-wide launch of Destination 2050.

This project brings together five European professional air transport organisations: ACI EUROPE (Airport Council International EUROPE), A4E (Airlines for Europe), ASD (Aerospace and Defense Industries Association of Europe), CANSO (Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation) and ERA (European Regions Airline Association).

It is based on a technical study carried out by NLR, the Royal Netherlands Aerospace Centre, and SEO Economics. It maps out the path towards zero net carbon emissions for all flights within and departing from European airspace. It proposes a combination of measures that would make flying more sustainable :

  • improvements in aircraft and engine technologies could lead to emission reductions of 37%
  • the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) could reduce emissions by 34%
  • the implementation of economic measures could lead to emission reductions of 8%
  • improvement in ATM and aircraft operations could yield to 6% system-level C02 emissions reduction

The number of European air passengers is expected to grow by an average of around 1.4% per year between 2018 and 2050 without compromising the sector's ability to reach zero net CO2 emissions by then.
